2.Is big urban data changing how we understand cities, and what are the implications for the future role of urban planning and planners?
We are currently seeing the way spatial data and big urban data are transforming the way we live in our cities. As an example, within transport the last decade alone has witnessed the death of the street directory, live tracking of public transport and a taxi industry struggling to adapt to the rise of GoCatch and Uber, to name but a few. In terms of urban governance, city dashboards – tracking real-time data – aim to transform how we manage our cities.
Your essay will explore how the ‘big data’ and spatial data of today will shape our cities of tomorrow. You’ll consider both academic and popular literature on big data and finding examples of cities, states or countries embracing their use, how it is changing our urban fabric and the way people live in a city, and what implications that has for urban planning activity.
